I don't know where to put this other than in the recycling bin

The switch is closed, which causes a current to flow through the coil. This exerts a magnetic force on the coil, which causes a side to rotate clockwise. Coil cuts across magnetic field, which causes a change in flux linkage across the coil. This induces an emf due to Faraday's law. Lenz's law states that the magnetic field will act to oppose the force that caused it. The coil will continue its motion in the same direction, to reduce the rate of change of flux linkage across the coil, which will oppose the flow of current. Split ring commutator reverses polarity of contacts, which causes the flow of current to be reversed and which enables the coil to continue rotating in the same direction - motor effect.
